Why Most Driveways Fail — And What Actually Prevents It

Sinking Blocks. Cracked Edges. Water Pooling.

Most driveways don’t fail because of the surface you see —

they fail because of what’s underneath.

These aren’t surface issues — they’re groundworks failures.

Poor excavation, weak sub-base installation, and lack of drainage lead to long-term movement, instability and expensive repairs far sooner than expected.

That’s why we build every driveway from the ground up —

properly engineered, correctly compacted, and built to perform long-term — not just look good on installation day.

WHAT WE DO DIFFERENTLY

Driveways That Don’t Sink, Shift or Fail

Most driveways look finished on the surface. Ours are built as a full structural system — with proper excavation, compacted sub-base preparation, planned drainage and a finish designed to perform under daily vehicle use.

The surface is only the final layer.

The strength is underneath.

How We Build
It Properly

01

Correct Excavation

We remove weak ground to the right depth before anything is installed.

02

Compacted Sub-Base

The driveway is built on layered, compacted MOT Type 1 for strength.

03

Drainage Planned Early

Falls and water routes are designed before the surface is laid.

04

Finish Installed as a System

The final surface is only as good as the structure underneath it.

Our Driveway Build Process

Driveways Built From the Ground Up.

A premium driveway is only as good as the structure underneath it. From excavation and sub-base depth to drainage, edging and final surfacing, our driveway process is designed to prevent sinking, pooling, movement and early failure.

01

Site Survey & Driveway Planning

We assess access, levels, existing ground conditions, vehicle use, drainage points and layout options before recommending the right driveway construction method.

02

Excavation & Ground Reduction

The existing surface is removed and excavated to the correct depth, giving the new driveway the foundation it needs for daily vehicle use and long-term stability.

03

Drainage & Fall Design

We plan water movement properly using falls, channels and drainage solutions to help reduce standing water, surface flooding and pressure on the finished driveway.

04

Sub-Base Installation

A compacted sub-base is installed in layers to create the strength beneath the surface — helping reduce rutting, dips, cracks and future movement.

05

Edging, Restraints & Surface Build

We install the correct edge restraints and surface system, whether block paving, monoblock, resin, gravel or another finish suited to the property.

06

Finishing, Clean-Up & Handover

The final surface is checked for alignment, levels, finish and drainage before the site is cleaned and the completed driveway is handed over properly.

How to Avoid Hiring the Wrong Driveway Contractor

Before choosing any driveway company in Glasgow, make sure they can confidently answer “yes” to the following:

Are you fully insured for public liability?

(Pear Landscaping Group is covered up to £10 million.)

Do you provide a written structural guarantee?

(We back every installation with a 7-year workmanship guarantee.)

Is your work SuDS compliant?

(We design and install drainage systems to meet Scottish Water requirements.)

Can I see a design before work begins?

(We provide 4D visual models for every bespoke project.)

If a contractor can’t clearly answer these, you’re taking a risk on the quality and lifespan of your driveway.

Frequently asked questions

  • Are you fully insured to carry out structural driveway work in Glasgow?

I typically work with founder-led companies and growth-stage organizations that are facing increasing complexity. This includes businesses that have proven traction but need clearer structure, stronger alignment, and more disciplined execution to scale effectively.

  • What is the "300mm Engineering Protocol"?

Most driveway failures in Scotland occur because the sub-base is too shallow for the local soil. The Pear Standard dictates a minimum 300mm excavation depth. We replace unstable earth with high-density, mechanically compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. This ensures your driveway remains level and rut-free, even under the weight of heavy SUVs or in areas prone to the "Glasgow Sink."

  • How does the 4D Design Studio work?

We have a strategic partnership with an External Architectural Design Studio. Instead of a basic sketch, you receive a 4D Digital Twin of your property. This allows us to simulate drainage paths, analyze sunlight patterns across your choice of stone, and finalize the aesthetic before any excavation begins. It’s architectural precision brought to your front door.

  • Are your driveways SuDS compliant?

Yes. With the West of Scotland’s rainfall, drainage is not optional. We ensure all our resin and monoblock installations are SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) compliant. This means water filters naturally into the ground rather than overwhelming the local sewer system, satisfying all Scottish Water and local council requirements..

  • What does the 7-Year Structural Guarantee cover?

While many contractors offer a standard 12-month warranty, our 50 years of combined experience allows us to be more confident. Our 7-year guarantee covers the structural integrity of the installation—specifically the sub-base and levels. If we built it, it’s built to last.

  • Do you have insurance for large-scale residential projects?

Absolutely. We carry £10m in Public Liability Insurance. This is a requirement for the high-end "Prestige" estate works we undertake and provides total peace of mind for our residential clients in areas like Bearsden, Giffnock, and the West End.
